The sun is out in Provence

Today we said goodbye to Paris with our last croissant and caffe creme at our local Boulangerie, and the procurement of lunch supplies which took us to a fromagerie, Boulangerie, fruit stand and  grocery store.  Shopping in France is not one-stop shopping. We headed to the busy train station
where Kat studied the tour book for the next part of our journey
while  Rich kept an eagle eye on the board announcing our train track number. Europe is crazily efficient at train boarding...everyone gathers around the board and waits tensely staring at the board and then "voila" your track number is announced and every ticket holder makes a mad dash to get to their train immediately.  Which is good because you may only have minutes to board.  In fact, we only had three minutes to disembark in Avignon   Our picnic supplies were excellent - fresh strawberries and a mindblowingly delicious truffle cheese among other great items.
We arrived, picked up our car, and checked into a modern and well equipped Airbnb apartment rental. It was here we learned of the Egypt air crash originating in Paris. Clearly we are fine- and we fly out of Nice at the end of our trip so Audrey -you can stop worrying!

We set out to explore Avignon. It has been populated since the Neolithic era, though the current look and feel mostly date to the period of papal residency in the 1300s. The city is literally enclosed by a once protective fortifying wall, though now the towers mostly protect boutique shops and restaurants.

We finally slowed our pace a bit to enjoy some wine by a waterwheel on our warmest day so far.

Saw the last vestiges of an outdoor flea market that was closing down-with a "living" wall of greenery in the background.

Care to own a random stick of foosball men?  You can buy them in Avignon.
The streets are very very old, winding, complicated, beautiful.

But make for some tricky navigation, even with Google and iPhones in hand.

Kat found the theatre

And after a delicious dinner it was a twilight walk home.

Good night from our new home for a few days here in Provence.
